A $20,000 Beach Bar in Brazil

Monday, June 13, 2011

Dear Reader,

An hour west of Fortaleza you'll find the beach town of Paracuru. The coast is different here compared to the beach towns east and west. It's sheltered, protected from the trade winds...and the land is elevated from the shoreline of sandy beach and low cliffs. The best swimming beaches are here...

Take a look.

Paracuru's town square of imposing church and open-air cafes and restaurants sits above the beach. There's oil offshore. The royalties and salaries earned from the oil pay for a clean town of cobblestone streets and brightly-painted shops and homes. It's pretty and relaxed.

I had my lunch of freshly caught seafood in a restaurant minutes by foot from the town center and on the beach. We called ahead to the French chef. That's what you do here. Call in your order a couple of hours before you plan to eat, and the chef will go out and buy the fish straight off the boat. The fresh lobster and crab was top class. A local fisherman explained to me how they can spend days on end offshore on their little boats...unprotected from the elements. Hardy folk!

Then something grabbed my attention. A for sale sign on a little beach bar next door to the restaurant where we were dining like lords. It's small. Just enough space for a pizza oven and maybe sixteen chairs. And it needs a lick of paint and some repairs. But it has a beautiful perch, right on the beach.

I took this video from the beach looking towards this beach bar.

I asked one of my local contacts to call the number handwritten on the sign.

The asking price: $20,000.

Hmmm!

This is a really nice place to spend time. It's a little off the track of mainstream tourism right now, but popular with wealthy families from Fortaleza who own vacation homes here. I know that a couple of groups are considering this little village for residential development.

And if the tourists and second home owners come here, they'll be looking for a cool little place to hang out with family and friends...where they can enjoy pizza at lunchtime or drinks at sunset...

P.S. As you can see from the video this beach bar is right on the beach. Frequently land like this (right on the beach) is sold as a concession (like a lease) rather than titled land. It's important that you understand...and are comfortable with... the type of ownership of any real estate that you buy. Read more about this in the Pathfinder due diligence report here.
