Dear Reader,
I’ve scouted in Costa Rica countless times in the last five years. In 2011, I traveled there on three separate occasions for scouting trips. I’ve scoured the country north to south, coast to coast, searching for real estate opportunities.
I’ve explored remote valleys and hidden beaches way off the beaten track. I gave you the heads-up on the Southern Zone, a beautiful location with amazingly low real estate prices… 4 years before the opening of a new coastal highway cut the drive time to the Southern Zone in half…
That new coastal highway, the Costanera, opened in January 2010. The Costanera connects with another new road, the Caldera highway, to reach Costa Rica’s capital city, San Jose.
And the Caldera highway opens up a location that’s now just over an hour from San Jose’s big-city amenities. It’s set in lush tranquil countryside, close to attractive beaches… And you can buy 1.25 acre ocean-view lots here from only $99,000.
On a scouting trip in 2011, I decided to focus on the section of coast opened up by the Caldera highway. I spent three long days looking at properties, meeting with developers, and weighing up the potential of this location.
I didn’t see any projects that really grabbed me. On day four, we headed into the hills that sweep down to the coast for a bite to eat. And there I found a charming little village - and the real estate highlight of the entire trip.
This section of coast is a popular day trip destination for Costa Ricans who come here to relax on sandy beaches. The hills and mountains back from the coast see a handful of tourists from the nearby cruise ship port looking for a zip line or horse riding tour. It’s a local place that’s off the radar for most foreign tourists and property buyers.
Right now, this location is overlooked, under developed, and undervalued. And that means low property prices. I found one and a quarter acre ocean-view lots for only $99,000.
I’ll give you all the details on Friday. Plus, I’ll tell you how you can get a 10% discount that cuts the start price for those lots to $89,100.
From the village, we drove to a lookout point high in the hills. Gazing down over the majestic mountains, little farms and the wide blue ocean, I didn’t want to leave.
This place is somewhere you should have on your shortlist if you’re looking for a second home in Costa Rica. It ticks all the right boxes: location, accessibility, beauty… and early-in pricing. I’ll give you the lowdown on Friday.
