The Icing on the Cake

Sunday, August 18, 2013

Dear Reader,

It’s a story I’ve heard from many of the buyers in this resort community. It wasn’t the main reason they bought a home here – it’s the icing on the cake.

And very nice icing it is, too.

I’m talking about the Wellness Center at Tao, a unique community on Mexico’s Caribbean coast. Tao is set in a five-star resort, with a 27-hole world-class golf course and a powder-sand beach:

Other resort amenities include a good choice of restaurants, cafes, and bars, a spa and a small commercial plaza.

The resort lifestyle was a big draw for many buyers. Plus, the setting was ideal, close to an international airport, big-box stores, shopping and nightlife.

Many buyers appreciated the property prices, too. While a house in the resort can easily set you back a million dollars, luxury condos in Tao start from only $201,000. (You can also buy town homes and residences.)

And the developer finance on offer made buying a home in Tao even more affordable.

So far, it’s easy to see the appeal of Tao. But Tao was planned as much more than a community of homes. It’s about a way of living, focused on the Tao Center.

What do you think of the Tao Wellness Center, I’d ask buyers. Their answer usually went along the lines of: It’s nice, but it’s not the reason I bought. Then they’d tell me about the beautiful Caribbean Sea, the award-winning beaches, the amazing golf course…and how the Wellness Center was “the icing on the cake.”

But today it’s a different story. That’s mainly because the Tao Wellness Center is up and running. Owners and would-be buyers can see it, touch it, use it. And they now understand its appeal.

The gym in the Tao Center looks across the trees, down towards the lap pool and swimming pool:

The gym faces the juice bar (which makes excellent smoothies) and the traditional Mayan sweat lodge.

You can join daily yoga and tai chi classes at the Center…or take part in workshops on meditation, healing and balanced living.

Jonathan Ellerby heads up the Tao Center. He’s the former spiritual director at Canyon Ranch in the US. He’s making the Tao vision a reality – an active mind and body, in tune with nature and the environment.

Today, the Tao Wellness Center is the heart of the community. And, for some, it’s one of the main reasons they buy here. They’re looking for a second home, where they can stay active and engaged. Or they’re heading to retirement and want to spend more time on themselves, staying in shape, getting rid of their emotional baggage, and learning new skills.

And, as one owner remarked, the Center’s a big plus, not just for owners. It’s an added amenity for renters, too, helping give your home an edge over other vacation homes in the area.

In fact, I can’t think of another community where you get so many amenities,  from the natural beauty of the beaches and Caribbean Sea and coral reef…the chic beach towns and shopping close by…the golf course and restaurants inside the resort…and finally the Tao Wellness Center, the icing on the cake.
