Dear Reader,

When I first came to Uruguay a few years ago, while living in Ecuador, I had expected to enjoy a Third-World adventure. But what I found was a side of Latin America that I didn’t know existed.

Uruguay turned out to be an honest, First World country with a high standard of living, a great infrastructure, and a stable government. Yet it still had a relaxed pace of life, a non-violent, European-style culture, and the low cost of living that I’d grown accustomed to elsewhere in the region.

I found this blend irresistible, and now Uruguay is home.

Not long ago I ran into David James, a friend I’ve known for a couple of years. I’ve followed the progress of his Sugar Loaf project in Uruguay, and it was a pleasant surprise to run into him.

David’s project, Sugar Loaf Ocean Club and Spa, initially got my attention, because it is the first of its kind in Uruguay.

You’ll enjoy an unbeatable location in South America’s premier destination

Sugar Loaf Ocean Club and Spa is perfectly situated for those who want to be close to the major attractions of Uruguay, yet prefer the peace, tranquility, and comfort of a private, luxurious community in the countryside.

Sugar Loaf, seen from Punta del Este

Just a few minutes from the town of Piriápolis, the homes look out from a broad mountain side at the base of Uruguay’s most notable mountain and national park, Pan de Azúcar, or "sugar loaf" in Spanish. Accessed from a quiet, country lane, Sugar Loaf Ocean Club and Spa is within easy distance of the best of what Uruguay has to offer.

The luxury resort of Punta del Este lies just 25 minutes away along the coast, with its famous beaches, casinos, nightlife and shows. The fine dining is second to none, the atmosphere is festive and friendly, and the prices are reasonable.

Less than one hour in the other direction is Uruguay’s capital city of Montevideo. Here you’ll enjoy the old-world feel of a European city, from its magnificently restored opera house and theater to its tiny old cafés where men in berets sip cappuccino and solve the world’s problems. Great restaurants abound, as do small theaters, music halls, and art galleries.

Two international airports are close by, with Montevideo’s 45 minutes away, and Punta del Este’s just 15 minutes. Brazil is about three hours distant by car on Uruguay’s well maintained, high-speed highway system. Buenos Aires can be reached via a 25-minute flight, or a relaxing ferry ride.

The best part of the location is Piriápolis itself

Tucked into a peaceful cove, Piriápolis reminds me of an old-fashioned seaside town from the 1950s. As you stroll along the ocean-front walk past the grand old Argentino hotel, you’ll enjoy not only the sand and sea, but also the restaurants, cafés and shops in this popular town. For many Uruguayans, Piriápolis is their final destination, and they look no further for their seaside getaway.

The bright, sandy beach at Piriapolis

Less than three miles from Sugar Loaf Ocean Club and Spa, Piriápolis boasts not only some of the region’s most lovely and popular beaches, but also one of its few marinas, with space available at very reasonable prices for the boater or yachtsman. In the evening, you can enjoy a fresh seafood dinner, catch a show, or try your luck at the casino.

As a home-owner in Sugar Loaf, you’ll enjoy the best of all worlds: you’re in a modern luxury community in Piriápolis, a picturesque, small-town beach resort; you’ve got Punta del Este at your doorstep, Montevideo less than an hour away, and an international airport within a 15-minute drive. That’s what I call convenient.

You’ll find nothing like Sugar Loaf Ocean Club and Spa, anywhere else in Uruguay

I’ve traveled extensively throughout Uruguay since 2004, and this project is unique in my experience. In fact, it is the first project designed with the standards and expectations of the North American expat in mind. Let me explain…

The Piriapolis marina awaits the boater or yachtsman

Most Latin American resort developments are relatively high-density. But Sugar Loaf Ocean Club and Spa is a large property of 75 acres, so you won’t feel hemmed in; it has the spaciousness that North Americans are accustomed to. The surrounding area is mostly pines, rolling hills, and pasture land, so the entire ambiance is one of peace and nature.

Most properties on the Uruguayan coast are vacation homes that provide basic accommodation. They’re great for use as a weekend retreat by people in nearby Montevideo, but not really suited for those who come from another continent to retire or spend months in residence. Sugar Loaf Ocean Club and Spa will have the comforts, amenities, and most importantly, the standards that you expect in a luxury home.

The Enchanted Rock Spa at Sugar Loaf will cater to every desire of the body, mind, and spirit. You can relax not only with a variety of soothing massages, but with aromatherapy, yoga or meditation as well.

If you need to conduct business, you’ll find the planned modern business center and conference room to be well-equipped and convenient. Wireless Internet service will be available throughout the community, and all utilities will be underground to preserve the harmony with nature.

The on-site restaurant, El Alquimista, will offer a changing menu of fresh fish, local Angus beef and a superb selection of Uruguayan and Argentinean wines.

The most spectacular aspect however is the view. Located at one of the country’s high points, the property enjoys a full 180-degree view to the front, and a view of the rolling hills to the back, including the famous Sugar Loaf, which abuts the property.

You can pick the luxury getaway that’s right for your taste and budget

Sugar Loaf Ocean Club and Spa is offering lots and luxury villas, with models of two, three, and four bedrooms on lots of a quarter to half an acre, each with a dazzling ocean view. You choose your lot…and then decide which home model you prefer. Lots start at $69,900. The villas start at $239,900 and go up to $560,000.

If you are not ready yet to decide on a home model, you can simply buy a lot. There is no build requirement, meaning you can sit on your lot for as long as you like. There is developer financing available on the lots, too.

Perhaps best of all, you’ll be in Uruguay

"The country feels like a mix of culture-savvy Europe, with a dose of the pleasantly pastoral that’s somehow reminiscent of New Zealand’s rural North Island - all bundled up with a unmistakably South American laid-back approach to the good life."—Author Terry Ward, from Unexpected Uruguay as featured by AOL/Time Warner

Uruguay is the rising star of South America, and has become a big hit with expats seeking a First World, solid infrastructure, an honest, European culture, and low levels of crime.

The government and the police are honest, and the settlers living here from around the world want to keep things that way.

From its pleasant weather with four seasons, to its low cost of living and enviable offshore banking policies, Uruguay has turned into one of the most popular destinations in South America today.

Now is the time to take advantage…

Sugar Loaf Ocean Club and Spa will have the amenities, quality, convenience, and ambiance that the North American property-owner wants, but seldom sees in Latin America. Here in Uruguay, you’ll find nothing else like it.

The property market in Uruguay is on the upswing, with more investors and second-home owners coming each month. Prices have been rising over the past two years, and they show no signs of slowing down. .

There’s no better time to buy than now, and no better place than Sugar Loaf Ocean Club and Spa.
