Where You Won’t Have to Settle for Less

Friday, May 07, 2010

Dear Reader,

Nicaragua’s Pacific Riviera and the beach area west of Fortaleza offer stunning seacoasts and incredible real estate values. $48,000 buys you an ocean-view lot on the Nicaraguan Riviera…and $90,000 buys a 2-bed villa on the beach west of Fortaleza.

These prices reflect the early-in nature of the market in these locations. But just because you’re early in, doesn’t mean you have to forgo culinary treats. Surprisingly, you can eat very well in both locations. We asked contacts Marc Brown and Mike Colwill to give us the lowdown on two beachfront spots where you won’t have to give up the good life.

French Cooking on this Riviera?

Tola, Nicaragua: At first glance from the road, Las Plumerias, is an impressive sight, surrounded by rich green foliage. As you wind your way up the hillside, you start to sense the laid-back beach atmosphere—mixed with chic French style. The vibrant owners Etienne and Emie sing out greetings as you enter, extending welcoming invitations to “come in, sit down, drink and eat what you like.”

Etienne and Emie offer a warm, family-style French dining experience, starting with tasty appetizers as you settle into your surroundings. The candle lit main course of fresh seafood, beef or chicken follows… then dessert, and coffee, and a second, third, or fourth glass of wine.  As in France, dining can last late into the night, fueled by intriguing conversation, laughter, and the simple joy of sharing a meal with others. At Las Plumerias, add in fresh ocean breezes, and a unique Nicaraguan flair…a combination you’ll find hard to match in France.

As I said, ocean-view lots close to Las Plumerias start at $48,000…in a stunning, 2700-acre private community. The homes here look like they should have multi-million dollar price tags. Amenities include five beaches, nature trails, an on-site restaurant, and bar…and a luxurious new clubhouse is planned. Contact Marc Brown here if you’d like to explore this location for yourself.

A Gourmand’s Paradise on the Beach

Taiba, Brazil: It’s hard to believe that you can enjoy French-style crepes with blue cheese beside the beach in a little town of only 2,500 people. Or that you can call ahead if you’re in a group, so the chef can buy the pick of the day’s fishing catch, just for you.

Taiba has attracted wealthy Brazilians and bohemian Europeans for many years. Many of the Europeans who stayed are artists and foodies. They make a living serving up fine fare to the wealthy Brazilians who come here at the weekends. They’re not in it for the money, though: a great lunch costs just $10. They are here because they love Taiba…and they love to cook.

Most of the year, there is little competition for tables. Your host has time to sit with you and explain what he would like to cook for you. One week of the year, however, it’s different. This little beach town becomes home to 10,000 gourmands who descend on Taiba for the annual food festival.

It’s serious business. There are processions through the streets, contests, concerts and sports tournaments. Food is involved at every point. Taiba’s sixth festival introduced the gastronomic tour. It’s a bit like a pub-crawl…with foodies moving from restaurant to restaurant.

Property prices in Taiba are as mouthwatering as the meals…and represent good-value, too. A 2-bed duplex villa on the sand with finance available costs 165,000 reals ($89,964). The duplex is ready to move into now, and has an ocean view deck with Jacuzzi. Contact Mike Colwill here to find out more.
